Brushstrokes!

Brushstrokes . . . the name came suddenly, out of nowhere, or out of somewhere, but it really doesn’t matter. It came and speaks to what The Greensboro School of Creativity and our lives are all about.

Yes, this is a school where many pick up brushes and try to paint, just as it is a place where others pick up pens, so the title is a fitting way to describe what happens here, but I like it for a deeper reason.

I think each person comes into this world to make his or her brushstroke.

It may be a brushstroke on a canvas or in a courtroom, as a member of a big company or a small family. It might be a brushstroke everyone notices or no one at all. But picking up whatever brushes we have been given in this life and reaching out and making our mark is what we are called to do.

It takes courage to pick up any brush and make a stroke. The voices in our heads will tell us “How dare you!”  “Who do you think you are?”  And if they don’t, the voices of others will fill the void: “You call that a brushstroke?” “Have you seen what others have done?”

On this the first entry on the blog, I want to encourage all of us to thank the voices for sharing and move on. It is a new day for us all, and it is my prayer that we will pick up brushes that are new or neglected and paint as we have never painted before!

Let’s celebrate each and every courageous brushstroke we make and encourage others to do the same.
